Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC)
The administrative executive committee of the academic staff and the Academic Staff Assembly provides administrative support to the Academic Staff Assembly. This support includes, providing the Assembly with necessary information, coordinating/initiating meetings and meeting agendas, transmitting recommendations and decisions of the Assembly to the appropriate office, and implementing the policies of the Assembly in ensuring the role of academic staff in governance as stated in Wisconsin Statute 36.09(4m). Committee seats for academic staff: 9 seats with a minimum of 3 seats up for election annually.
Communications Committee
Works with other campus units, entities, and organizations to coordinate communication relevant to academic staff for both internal and external audiences. This coordination includes identifying strategies to address communication gaps. Committee seats for academic staff: 9 seats with 3 seats up for election annually.
Compensation and Economic Benefits Committee (CEBC)
Reviews existing and proposed policies, legislation relating to academic staff compensation and fringe benefits, and recommends possible courses of action to Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC), the Academic Staff Assembly (ASA), and Academic Staff Professionals Representation Organization (ASPRO). Committee seats for academic staff: 9 seats with 3 seats up for election annually.
Districting and Representation Committee (DRC)
Reviews election and districting processes and rules to ensure that academic staff members may exercise their institutional governance rights effectively, equitably, and efficiently, in accordance with Academic Staff Policies and Procedures. Committee seats for academic staff: 6 seats with 2 seats up for election annually.
Mentoring Committee
Promotes professional and personal development among academic staff through its mentoring program, which recruits and connects individuals who have been on campus for less than five years (mentees) with individuals who have been on campus for more than five years (mentors). Committee seats for academic staff: 9 seats with 3 seats up for election annually.
Nominating Committee
Recommends candidates for consideration for appointments or election to UW-Madison committees. Committee seats for academic staff: 9 seats with 3 seats up for election annually.
Personnel Policies and Procedures Committee (PPPC)
Continuing review of all personnel policies and procedures relating to academic staff and makes recommendations to the Assembly on these, and is responsible for revising and updating Academic Staff Policies and Procedures (ASPP). Committee seats for academic staff: 9 seats with 3 seats up for election annually.
Professional Development and Recognition Committee (PDRC)
Selects the Academic Staff Excellence Awards, Academic Staff Professional Development Grant, and Executive Education Grant recipients. They provide information to the academic staff community about awards and professional development opportunities. Committee seats for academic staff: 12 seats with 4 seats up for election annually.
Academic Staff Appeals Committee (ASAC)
Reviews or hears all appeals of nonrenewals, nonretentions of probationary employees, layoffs, discipline and dismissals, and grievances not resolved at a lower level; Findings of fact with a recommendation are forwarded to the chancellor or designee. Committee seats for academic staff: 12 seats with 4 seats appointed annually.
Shared Governance Committees
Term lengths for seats on Shared Governance Committees are typically 3 years unless a different term is indicated below. Appointments to these committees may be renewed once upon committee chair approval so the availability of open seats varies from year to year.
Archives
Preserves University records and information of permanent historical value; provides records management services, serves as an educational resource encouraging administrative and scholarly research in its collections; determines the policies governing the control and use of the university archives. Committee seats for academic staff: 1 seat with 1 seat appointed every 3 years.
Athletic Board
Exercises the authority of the faculty over intercollegiate athletics, subject to the review, direction and control of the Faculty Senate and of the faculty itself. They have responsibility and authority to take all action appropriate to the supervision of the intercollegiate athletic program making decisions on issues related to UW student athlete academics and welfare, as well as assuring compliance with UW, Big Ten, and NCAA policies, athletic personnel issues, athletic facilities, and athletic department finances. A separate call is sent out to all academic staff when a seat is available on the Athletic Board. Members of the Athletic Board serve 4-years. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every two years.
Budget Committee
Advises and makes recommendations to the chancellor, the provost, and the vice chancellor for finance and administration on institutional budget issues including matters of compensation and economic benefits for all employees, long-range financial strategies, state biennial budget proposals, and allocations to schools, colleges, and divisions. Advises the shared governance executive committees on issues of budgetary impact and the public position to be taken on budgetary issues, and meets regularly with vice chancellor for finance and administration. Serves as a resource for schools/colleges, departments, and others on matters related to the budget. Consults with and advises other committees, such as school/college academic planning councils and campus planning committees, relating to institutional-level budgetary matters. The committee may also recommend the creation of ad hoc committees on budget-related matters. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every two years.
Campus Diversity and Climate
Advises the administration, faculty, academic staff, university staff, and ASM regarding diversity policy and its planning, implementation, assessment, and revision. Strives to create an environment where each individual feels respected, valued and supported, while respecting academic freedom and freedom of speech. Committee seats for academic staff: 4 seats with 2 seats appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Campus Transportation Committee
Provides advice and recommendations to the administration and all governance bodies on policies and budgetary matters. Interprets policies related to transportation and parking adopted by governance bodies. Initiates and recommends projects for addressing campus transportation needs including projects to enhance pedestrian, bicycle, bus, and automobile access to the campus. The bicycle-pedestrian subcommittee is now a part of this committee. Committee seats for academic staff: 3 seats with 1 seat appointed annually.
Dean of Students Office Advisory
Advises the dean of students, the Faculty Senate, and administration on aspects of student life not part of the formal instructional program of the university. They recommend programs and policies and advise the dean of students on organization and priorities for programs under her/his direction. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Disability Access and Inclusion
Advise the University ADA Coordinator and relevant institutional units with primary responsibility for ADA compliance, and support their work to ensure the policies, programs, and services of the institution are accessible for students, employees, and guests of the university who have disabilities. Committee seats for academic staff: 1 seat on each subcommittee, Physical and Digital, Employment, ad Instructional. The term limits are 3 years, with 1 seat appointed annually.
Equity and Diversity Resource Center
Works with the director of the Office for Equity and Diversity, providing consultation, advises the university administration and governance organizations on policy issues related to affirmative action and compliance. Committee seats for academic staff: 3 seats with 1 seat appointed annually.
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer People in the University
Recommends to administrative offices and governance bodies changes in university priorities, policies, practices, and programs that advance equity and diversity across the spectrum of gender identity and expression and sexual orientation. Consults and collaborates with administrative offices and governance bodies to advocate for an inclusive and respectful campus climate and culture for faculty, staff, and students across the spectrum of gender identity and expression and sexual orientation. Evaluates and monitors the status of GLBTQ members of the university community. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Health Care Advisory
Promotes and enhances health and community on campus and acts as a liaison between students and other members of the university community; acts as an advisory resource to University Health Services. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Immigration and International Issues Committee
Provides general advice and recommendations to the administration and all governance bodies on immigration and international student and staff issues. Considers how immigration policy impacts UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff and then provides guidance to campus leadership, especially offices working with immigration issues. Information Technology
Faculty advisory body for policy and planning of information technology throughout the university. Reviews and recommends strategic planning for the University’s information technology resources, performance of information technology facilities and services, receives reports from committees formed to address specific information technology issues, monitors technical developments, receives recommendations from departments, deans, and the Division of Information Technology regarding the establishment, abolition or merger of information technology services and facilities supported by University funds. No academic staff member employed by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) can serve as an academic staff representative on this committee. Committee seats for academic staff: 3 seats with 1 seat appointed annually.
Labor Codes and Licensing Advisory Committee
UW-Madison has contracts allowing more than 450 companies to make products bearing the University’s name/ logos. We are one of four Universities in the nation that actively incorporates corporate responsibility awareness and performance in licensing applications and renewals. As part of University standards, brands and suppliers are required to adhere to a code of conduct. If violations occur, a licensee has the opportunity to correct the problem or have its relationship with the university terminated. Lakeshore Nature Preserve
The purpose of this committee is to ensure the integrity of the lakeshore nature preserve through the provision of necessary and appropriate oversight, policies, guidelines, stewardship and management. Committee seats for academic staff: 3 seats with 1 seat appointed annually.
Lectures
Considers requests for lectures of general interest that are not primarily supplementary to or extensions of programs of instruction provided by colleges, schools, or departments. Application for lectures within the jurisdiction of the committee may be made by departments or other groups of faculty members. Committee seats for academic staff: 1 seat with 1 seat appointed every 3 years.
Library
The Library Committee is the faculty advisory body for policy and planning for libraries throughout the university including the General Library System. They review and make recommendations on long range planning for the university’s library resources, performance of the libraries, monitor technical developments, consult with/advise administrative officers on library budget and allocation of resources. No academic staff member employed in the General Library System is eligible to serve on this committee as an academic staff representative. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Memorial Library
Reviews and advises the Memorial Library Administration on policies related to collection development, evaluation, and bibliographic activities, especially in the humanities, social sciences, and general reference. They advise the Memorial Library Administration on major policy issues. Significant gift collections, special fundraising efforts, major building/space remodeling projects, and major appointments are items which the committee is consulted. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Recreational Sports Board
Advises administration on development, programming, staffing, maintenance, and financing of recreational sports facilities for faculty, staff, and students. They Initiates actions in matters of budget and personnel for the chancellor. When issues related to academic matters develop, decisions are restricted to a subcommittee consisting of the faculty members of the committee. Disputes about issues identified as academia are resolved by the University Committee. Committee seats for academic staff: 2 seats with 1 seat appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Retirement Issues
Review and make recommendations on university services relating to retirees and services relating to retirement planning. Committee seats for academic staff: 3 with 2-3 seats appointed every 2 of 3 years.
Student Academic and Non-Academic Misconduct Hearing Panel and Hearing Examiners
Reviews cases of academic and non-academic misconduct. There is one required meeting at the start of the Fall semester and a required four hour training. Additional training is available on sensitive cases. Service on committees or as an examiner is based upon availability of the committee members. Committee seats for academic staff: 15 with 5 seats appointed annually.
Undergraduate Recruitment, Admissions and Financial Aid
Represents the faculty in regard to all aspects of the recruitment and admission of students and financial aid for students– except those handled by the faculties of individual colleges, schools, or departments. They make recommendations to the faculty concerning university policies on admission, financial aid, and programs directed at enhancing the quality and diversity of the undergraduate student body. University Bookstore Board of Trustees
Manages the business of the University Book Store; ensuring the book store is managed in a financially responsible manner and is fulfilling its duties as written in the bylaws. University Bookstore Board of Trustees are appointed to 4-year terms. Committee seats for academic staff: 1 with 1 seat appointed every 4 years.
University Curriculum Committee
Approves courses. Proposals for new credit courses, or for modifications of or discontinuation of existing credit courses, shall be approved by the department (or department-like body), then by the school or college, and finally by the University Curriculum Committee. Review of course offerings. The University Curriculum Committee may review and recommend the alteration or discontinuance of existing credit courses, and the establishment of new courses. Advice on educational policy and planning. On its own initiative or on request, the University Curriculum Committee may advise the chancellor, provost, deans, or other administrative officers of the university on educational policy and planning and their implementation. Members of this committee must have taught one or more UW-Madison courses. Committee seats for academic staff: 4 with 1-2 seats appointed annually.
University Research Council
Advises the vice chancellor for research and graduate education (VCRGE) on the overall UW-Madison research enterprise.Brings to the attention of the VCRGE views and opinions of the faculty and staff. In turn, members are responsible for assisting the Office of the VCRGE in helping to communicate the research resources of the VCRGE office.Advises and counsels the VCRGE and the chancellor in the formulation of the annual request to the WARF board of trustees. The VCRGE and chancellor shall routinely seek the advice and counsel of the committee regarding the allocation and disposition of WARF funds. Ensures that the disposition of WARF funds by the university is transparent to the WARF board of directors. The committee, or its individual members, shall be available to the WARF board of trustees, upon request, as direct and independent advisors and as such shall share with the trustees their expertise and insight. Wisconsin Union Council
This governing board of the Wisconsin Union is responsible to the Board of Regents through the Chancellor; they determine the scope of union programs through the approval of the free program goals and budgets setting overall building policies, guidance and counsel to various operating departments. Members of the Wisconsin Union Council serve 2-year terms. Committee seats for academic staff: 1 with 1 seat appointed every 2 years.
Women in the University
This committee recommends to administrative offices and governance bodies changes in university priorities, policies, practices and programs that would improve the status of women. It also collaborates and consults with administrative offices and governance bodies to more fully support gender equity, employee engagement, an inclusive and respectful culture, and diversity. The committee also evaluates and monitors the status of women employees at the university. Committee seats for academic staff: 6 with 2 seats appointed annually.
