On Friday April 6th Karen Mittelstadt, UW-Madison, along with two other UW System academic staff members received Academic Staff Excellence Awards from the Board of Regents. This honor is given to select individuals for their contributions to their department and university, their positive personal interaction in the field, and their unique approach that improves department environment and overall quality of work. These awards are the UW System’s highest honor awarded to members of the academic staff.
Karen Mittelstadt is the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at UW-Madison’s Nursing School. Mittelstadt provided critical leadership during recent events for the School of Nursing, including the reaccreditation process for the Doctor of Nursing Practice; the creation of the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, which will be launched in May; and the faculty’s redesign of undergraduate curriculum. She worked extensively to ensure the new concept-based curriculum aligned with accreditation standards and university policies, including guiding nearly 25 new courses through the approval process. Middelstadt helps administer the Nurses for Wisconsin initiative, a grant from the UW System that encourages nurses to assume nurse educator position in the state. She is also one of five assistant deans who present to students, parents, and guests at UW-Madison’s Student Advising, Orientation, and Registration. She actively participates on the Academic Advising and Policy Leaders Committee as well as scholarship and student award committees. Mittelstadt also participates in new adviser training and was selected to participate in the Kauffman Administrative Development Program, a program to help develop campus leaders at UW-Madison.
Regent Janice Mueller, chair of the selection committee stated, “This year’s award recipients represent the stellar quality of our academic staff across the UW System” adding “We are delighted to recognize their innovation, creativity, and dedication as they support student success and strengthen communities.” Each recipient is awarded $5,000.
